Ancient Mysteries, Modern Embarrassment: Alien Romulus & Ancient Apocalypse

we're now back sorry we weren't here last week me and Dan were PS and yeah I I was going to try and do something funny but I didn't yeah so as they know they would know by now oh I've still got time technically I could slap something together tomorrow oh yeah very quickly so I don't know you may see something before this or next maybe probably not welcome to multiple nerdgasm with your hosts Matt Luke and Dan multiple nerdgasm your guide to All Things nerdy but I thought I was doing so well but appears I finally I got the pack pox I now not well incapacitated yeah like

the flu C kind of boy just incubated for a week I think yeah not good cuz we're getting warm now it's the worst have a sort of cold flu when it's hot yeah and it was one thing I learned this week is that things are not taking as long to incubate oh we get we'll get to that I can't wait to hear this I thought you were going to be upset oh I am just not at what you thought I was going to be I can't wait to find out then do you want to not wait we do that jump straight into that you finally saw alien Romulus I did I watched alien Romulus um I I don't know that I can talk about it without spoilers so this will be yeah so we're going to talk alien romula spoilers yeah if you haven't seen

it and you want to skip ahead um I saw it I I did I I liked it it's not that I didn't like it it's just that the more I thought about it afterwards I was like hang on a minute and then there were the most horrifying scene m in the whole movie and I don't know why they kept showing this was [ __ ] deep faky in Holm on why did they do that because they got in there I saw there was an Android synthetic dead on the floor and I was like that kind of looks like ash that's neat that's a neat little nod they'll probably just leave that for the No No at one point he jumps up and I was like oh that looks pretty cool was just a quick Flash and it was him mhm let's leave it at that nope well

that was sort of to me I know why they did they sort of showing that they were just the Androids style that were around they yeah they were mess made it wasn't individual the I guess my problem with it was that the visual effect the visual effects were very bad and I I feel like the movie would have been improved by just not showing it as much I didn't mind it you could have had him serve the same function and just pop on the radio every now and then I knew it was it looked a bit weird but it didn't bother me that much I thought it looked really weird but I was watching it in 4k yeah maybe that maybe that might have been it I thought you would have been mad the

second they said xenomorph well that's interesting because it's not the word xenomorph I object to it's the usage of the word and it was used correctly in this movie he says xenomorph X1 [ __ ] whatever designation it is m M and then from then on he referred to it as the xenomorph meaning the alien yes like I have no problem with that the problem I have is when people think the alien's name is xenomorph a xen xenomorph xenomorph is a generic word yes yeah okay yeah no what the said that Matt's not going to be happy no no I actually laughed when he said it because I was like no no I'm actually fine with that that's that's how it should be used in my opinion what did you think of it being the original alien

uh I was okay with all that I liked that uh I liked so things I liked I really liked the addition of the Cocoon to the life cycle I thought that was really cool um we haven't seen that before no it was it was appropriately vagina looking um you know Giga would have been proud yeah we sort of see that now that yeah just blasting them out in the space doesn't kill them no they can cocoon themselves which makes sense they like they were in harsh conditions on LV 426 already so that makes sense um yeah I like that they were so they okay this is one question I had right the opening of the movie we see them retrieve that alien yep from the alien from Alien which I think people call Big Chad I learned

this week really that his name hang on big Chad no not big Chad big something else what the alien from Alien Gad big Chad what's his name Z he's referred to as big chap how the [ __ ] do I get big Chad big chat is not an official name for the xenomorph drone it is a nickname used by the cast crew for the Drone during the filming of the original movie but people kept using it online kept saying big Chap and I'm like why are they calling it big chap is that did they say that in Romulus no no yeah I'm surprised they didn't know that to be honest yeah that's the first time I've ever heard of it and that's yeah surprising um so yeah we see them

retrieve big chap MH they take him presumably to the Renaissance station which is Remis and Romulus which I loved by the way lay the station that was very cool and it was a cool way to have a section that was a bit less [ __ ] up at the start yes so you could then descend into madness later that was pretty good um and then they cut open the Cocoon and then you it shows you that it's it's the alien and you and it says alien and you go okay I'm watching alien yeah um but then I was like where'd they get the face huggers from and that bothered me for a long time because I think not because I wasn't I wasn't paying attention but also because I just I don't like the explanation so I think my brain just didn't get there I think the explanation

is um cuz Rook says they extracted a a fluid from the alien which is the Prometheus goo yes that's the one part I didn't like we're going back to Prometheus goo just so the explanation is that they apparently apparently I learned this online apparently there's a book called cold Forge which is an alien book recent fairly recent after Prometheus and in that book they explain that when the face hugger implants you it's not a embryo like we grew up we grew up with it being an embryo that's what I always was that's that's how we they impregnate you no it's the goo they put in there oh yeah and so that sucks apparently they got the goo and then they 3D print the face huggers and that's why there's no eggs they 3D print

like with these space 3D printers that can print organic substances that's where they came from I'm just going to skip over that part that's why I was like oh I'm liking the movie less as I learn this because at first I was like hang on where the [ __ ] did the face huggers come from and then I'm looking and I'm like you know what yeah I don't want to know just enjoy the [ __ ] that you like and it's it's taught me that I love Prometheus but apparently I don't like it when it gets too close to alien I like I like them in their Corners kind of thing like Prometheus should not be an alien movie that's that's the thing everything I love about Prometheus is the alien as in the alien is irrelevant yeah yeah so yeah so I didn't like that oh yeah and the thing I mentioned before is I've

don't like how the [ __ ] alien you get implanted I'm still going to say impregnated with with the thing and then it just [ __ ] comes out 5 minutes later that's not how it used to work no it used to take time and I also understand in Alien the fact that it took a long time built a lot of dramatic tension right and it surp so everyone could be surprised when it came out and we all know what's going to happen now so it's actually not that interesting for them to [ __ ] around for two days going everything's fine thank goodness because we all why they just speed it up now cuz you know what's going to happen the only way you could make it not satisfying to me though it's just they've changed it I think the only way you could sort of really introduce that

now is if someone was to get impregnant off screen and so you don't know who and it sort of happens yes that's the only way it would work these days well that's in Alien Resurrection there's that guy that wakes up uh and he's we know he's got one in there but I don't know that I think they do know but it just takes a while for it to he's running around he makes it halfway through the movie before something before it happens i' i' I've forgotten about that movie this reminded me of it a bit the ending of this was very strange that the ending was sort of very creepy it was very creepy I liked the creature but I again I didn't like and I I know this happens in Alien 2 like how [ __ ] fast did that thing get enormous yeah that was that was surprising

like I guess I that isn't that because I know in Alien it bursts out of cane it runs off and then I don't we don't actually know how long later but all of a sudden it's [ __ ] huge like all it's like big chap size so yeah but this is like seconds it was 2 seconds it was a baby and it came and then it crawled off and then all of a sudden it was [ __ ] huge 10 eating anything yeah cuz the whole thing was meant to be that they the aliens of they go out and then they start scourging for food and then they get bigger and they still grow very fast but something had to be a catalyst for them to they can't just grow without yeah yeah anything energy doesn't just get created it's converted also I I don't like that this

makes me ask questions about aliens because why is Burke not know like why do they not know about the alien in Aliens like in Aliens they don't know that the alien is in the deric on the other side of the planet after they find Ripley she tells them survey crew over there like it's just so it's just weird to me that it's like how do they not know that if they already know they already got big chap from the Nostromo and they've got this space station they've been manufacturing them like how do they not know about the alien at this point stop overthinking it I can't help it I can't help it I'm an old man and I it's something it's a movie that is like caught my identity in a way you know you know like can't help it I know but yet

you and I look at these conversations people talking online about stuff and I'm like I don't know what you're talking about because it's not in Alien aliens alien 3 or alien resurrection right and I don't like Alien Resurrection there's a lot of books out there now yeah I know it's like with Star Wars right you know I think we've talked about this before there's a certain point where you got old enough that you were like no new information thanks like yeah Alien 3 alien one two and three that's my reference for this stuff the stuff after it I'm like not for me no we don't need we're not a writer no and uh I'm yeah so anyway Romulus I I really enjoyed the first half of it uh especially the stuff at the start on the

planet I was like oh this is great and like I liked Andy the yep but yeah finding out like this universe is really messed up yeah yeah I liked all that stuff it was only once they I guess once I realized the goo had to be involved that's where I was like goo I don't care about the goo I like the anti-grav scene that was good that was a I want to watch it again now I might watch it this afternoon while I'm in bed it wasn't it yeah it wasn't bad it's just that there was a lot of stuff that my my brain had to like ignore that ignore that see the thing is good is I can actually just ignore that stuff I can question it sometimes but I can also just go e it's a movie that's I clearly did because people are like you know know he

explained where the face huggers came from the movie and and I was like my my my brain protected me from that information as I was watching it like my like it filtered it before it got to my Consciousness where it was like that's going to annoy you ignore it and then it wasn't until afterwards that I was like hang on a minute anyway yeah anyway yeah I liked it mhm just it had some stuff that annoyed me and the more I think about it the less sense it makes but yeah but if you don't think that's all of those movies now so better than alien Covenant it's the problem is you want to know more because you really enjoy it but the more you know the more you dislike it yeah yeah I just I don't want to know what they're

telling me yes yeah the stuff that you make on your head that's great I liked the alien when it was an alien from space can we go back to that please that's what I that's what I liked it and the the company wanted it and they didn't have it not that they not not whatever this is like it's confusing now well it's the problem that it has turned into like a whole franchise and you got to keep it going and try and tie it together and keep it and yeah and I feel silly now for having liked Prometheus so much cuz it really is that was the problem well AP was bad too but they like chopped off that off and yeah yeah but Prometheus introduced black goo I liked Prometheus just it should have been its own

thing and it's still if they didn't throw the alien at the end it still could have been well and it wasn't it wasn't actually the alien at the end it was kind of like something else so even then my brain was like no no it's okay mhm it was in it was alien Covenant where I was like no no no forget it I'm done now you have been watching something else this week and I want to talk to you about it cuz I'm scared okay I think you need an intervention oh oh I know what this is you'll be watching anient Apocalypse season 2 and I want to read something that was in the chat that's not all that I've been watching this week I've been watching uh Graham Hancock on various

shows cuz he's promoting the new season stting to things and it's the things that you don't to question like what like what what did I question was the the fact that like humans have been around for so many years but really civilizations only been around for 6,000 like what were we doing the rest of the time mhm Yeah well yeah well electricity's only been around for 200 like there's a catalyst so things just go very quickly but there's periods of nothing 300,000 years is a long time when when he like I said when he said it I was like it's a good question like Why didn't it happen earlier and then I I mean since then I look okay so what L's talking about is in an interview recently grahe Hancock said he put up a chart and he said we know that modern man as in Homo

sapiens first showed up around 300,000 years ago we also know you know they spread out everywhere yeah and then 6,000 years ago is all the civilizations we know about around the world there like six or seven major ones that we know about around the same time they all began Y and that that is interesting like in isolation that information is like oh yeah cuz then he's like what were we doing before that why was it not more spread out why didn't some develop it you know 100,000 years earlier what was the thing and then and I was like yeah okay good question but then I looked into it yes after I after I sent that message yes and the answer is well first of all the

shortly before 6,000 years ago like before that happened there was a [ __ ] ice age and like the Earth was barely inhabitable for long periods of time um and then apparently the answer according to most scientists is population density mixed with changing climate scarcity of food necessitated working together yeah to farm people found Agriculture and the reason that everybody around the world did it is because they all had to otherwise they would have [ __ ] died they just got to a point where the population got so big you can't just Loop off Hunting and Gathering yeah and I guess that makes sense too but also it was Atlantis Luke what if it was Atlantis well where's all that stuff well I learned in ancient

apocalypse season 2 the answer is it's in South America Luke what's it doing there well we don't we don't get that far no so these are the thing I I still need to fact check a lot of this what what I like about okay I'm I'm very interested in this stuff and I like uh do you know you know Flint Dibble the guy who debated grahe Hancock on Joe Rogan Flint Dibble is a really funny interesting guy but he's very dry uh on his YouTube channel like for me he's like like cuz it's he's he's an archaeologist and he's interested in actual facts and stuff like that so when you watch him he's on a zoom call it's like this he's just talking to some scientist and occasionally they'll pop a

slide up or anything and or something like that and he gives you information grahe Hancock is on Netflix and when he shows up at [ __ ] chenita or somewhere there's like [ __ ] music and the camera's spinning around and he's standing there looking at carvings and stuff and he's like what if these ancient civilizations knew about Venus and like and you're like yeah that's I mean it's it's more convincing isn't it it's scary that people think this is true well he's he's walked it back he's walked it back a lot in this his main as far as I can tell his main thesis in this is in a lot of the South American cultures like for example the Inca built a lot of

stuff and their style allegedly I I haven't fact checked any of this stuff allegedly their style of building was very like Square brick and blah blah blah blah blah but a lot of their stuff is built on these megalithic structures that are carved stone blocks similar to what we see in other civilizations around the world and so his theory is they didn't make that they found that and then they built on it so who did build it that's his theory not that just at the time it's just the easiest stuff to do people just I mean it certainly wasn't easy no like yeah there's no question of that and then and then like he talks to these experts who I know he Cherry picks his experts but they say yeah know we actually don't know how they did it look I can actually

understand CU When I was looking into Flat Earth even though I know it's not true when you start just only hearing from that Community you start the question like hold on yeah that's right that is a bit weird and to be clear I'm not actually questioning I just I find the show very entertaining he is very well spoken he's very interesting and it's very well done it is it's dramatic and it's entertaining and I think I said in the chat too I [ __ ] laugh out loud sometimes at the CU he's a he's an old man yeah right and so they'll but they'll do these dramatic shots where he's just kind of he's just kind of standing there looking like an old man but the camera's like whipping around in like Matrix style in like like there's a

shot in this of these like Amazonian Warriors running through the jungle and then it like slowly pans over and grahe Hancock's just standing there looking old in his leather jacket and it's like maybe I should watch it oh it's number four in TV shows world the moment yeah it doesn't surprise me it's it's it's compelling television even if it is [ __ ] yes okay but the problem more the problem with it is there's like I mean he's not basing it on nothing like these things that he's showing you are real it's just his interpretation of them wildly differs from everyone else yeah people have actually done a lot more research into

it so what I did with the first season I watched the first season I really liked it and at the end of every episode I was like [ __ ] how do you explain that and then I would go online and I would see oh archaeologists have made videos mhm explaining the things that he and it's very easy to explain yeah so this just came out so that hasn't happened yet yes but over the next few weeks I'm sure someone will explain to me why the [ __ ] geoglyphs in the Amazon don't indicate that there was Atlantis there or whatever or why Easter Island isn't Atlantis or I don't think he never he doesn't say Atlantis I'm I shouldn't yeah don't think he says at get very mad if accusing he used to talk about Atlantis didn't he he used to talk about

a lot of stuff he's walked all that stuff right back and in his defense he has and I think he knows that was a bit silly like this whole episodes maybe there's a there's at least one episode maybe more content than that just about aasa in this he's very into psychedelics now and I was like that explains a lot yeah that that does you'll take some look at something go what if this cuz he was like why is it that um all these civilizations around the world take these like psychedelics and they all draw geometric shapes where did that come from and it's like well we have the same brains it'd be weird if we didn't hallucinate the same [ __ ] like people

still taking them today like yeah why do yeah but like he's saying you know why is it all these geometric shapes like cuz cuz we're all humans we take the stuff and then that's what it does to us like makes it it's yeah like why do they why if we all drink you know [ __ ] why we all eat [ __ ] why do we all get sick that's a bit weird isn't it no it's not weird but he says it in his voice and it makes it question yeah yeah anyway good entertainment but I do I I I've seen the argument that he I think people go too far with the weird arguments he's been accused of like they've not calling him racist or anything but they're saying the stuff he's talking about a lot of the sources

of of racist and it's like well I mean he's clearly not saying this was like a white race of people that like he's saying from South America like these are clearly not like yeah he's not claiming that this is you know white people teaching the native but just it's not what he's saying at all but he's also going like these people weren't smart enough to come up with themselves and not even that he's just saying like now he saying I'm not I'm not saying he hasn't said stuff before I'm sure he probably may have and I'm I like I say he's walked a lot of stuff back all he's saying now is he thinks the fact that there's so many similarities he thinks it's not enough to say that we're all humans and we want

to do the same [ __ ] he thinks somebody taught them how to do it because there was a civilization before all those civilizations and then they put their own flare on it yeah yeah cuz it's not exactly the same I think some of the accusations that gets lab like I I think it's silly and it's probably not you know it's not true most of it's not true some of it might be true could be yeah but uh yeah I don't think calling him a racist or anything sensible and I think that does more harm than good too because then he can say oh they're just calling me a racist and it's like that's actually not the issue the issue is that you're teaching people nonsense they're calling me racist try

and shut me down and get me cancelled yeah like it gives him ammunition you just attack his arguments well then he can't do that sorry I'm fighting with a cat I see that what is the cat doing keeps pushing the microphone and is now biting me ow ow stay cats stay don't they if you train them I guess yeah this one's not trained H anyway ancient apocalypse season 2 oh and ke Reeves is in it oh yes I remember that his involvement appears to well it doesn't I've watched the whole season his involvement literally is he and

Graham stand somewhere mhm in a in a you know in a in a location uh and they talk and B got ke for a day if that yeah like an hour and it's just chat and then it's seem saying stuff like yeah I've always thought there was more to the story than we were told and then Graham's like M there is is and then it'll cut to something else and it's yeah okay I mean he got a paycheck is what I'm saying yeah I just still don't believe that he did it cuz I don't know that just sort of gives more ability which is that's what he's there for clearly like there is there is no reason for Kean Reeves to be in this other than to say Kean Reeves is in this so it must

be true yep you like K Reeves there he is yep he's nodding gr Hancock's telling him this stuff nodding so it looks like he's agreeing and he'd know anyway that's what I've been doing this week oh I've been doing one other thing but what have you been doing I've been talking a lot no no I'm enjoying this I'm remember I'm dying sure but I feel horrible to packs we have to talk about packs I went to packs no I'm I've got stuff to talk about I'll be ready for next week but no packs was great um it was Dan first time at the Australian packs yes and you realiz we maybe we can wait till he's here to do a full deep yeah all right um it was his first again forgot to do panels again because I

always get caught up oh yeah in tournaments and playing games and um there is a bit of controversy this year that I'll talk about this week is there someone got a lifetime ban from playing um tournaments at packs and maybe being banned from packs why cuz they were cheating at Ticket to Ride tournament is this we don't know this person we don't know this person okay good but yeah though they were caught and they would got a lifetime ban from playing tournament cuz they were yeah stealing cards and hiding them and lying about their tracks They completed and really and I think reason someone got caught not officially caught last year but they were questioned like keep an eye on this guy this this year someone was actually caught this year they

actually had prizes for winning tournaments so like not just a ribbon or not just a you still got your medal but King of Tokyo he's a the monster boxer King of Tokyo oh okay like decent prizes so I don't know if that had something to do with it but people have been known to try and cheat in the past but yeah that's just a little bit of gos that happened on the last day is it you they it's not me okay just checking I would never cheat I've I'm happy with my record of losing most tournaments at packs did you win anything did you win any tournaments no I got to the final quite a few times oh yeah it actually was quite nice one the last final we're in um cuz I see meet these people there every year like don't know their names we just see each other we play

tournaments we chat we catch up and then we w't sing in for another year they'd won a tournament the day before your name yes I'm terrible with names they won the day before they' won a tournament so got the prize so then I came second they went here you can have the King of Tokyo Monster Box I've got an expansion from King of Tokyo because they'd already won that copy so it was quite nice that like these people we just like hey we've already won so you can have this it wasn't our yeah yeah so that was quite a nice thing see we don't cheat we share the prizes right right but it's done for another year um we did go see panel which we weren't going to go see but we just ended up seeing it was quite interesting which we'll talk about next week okay but the thing I

love is also seeing games change over time cuz a lot of Indie Games there and you'll see them come out they'll show it and then they disappear for a year come back to next year and the game is completely reworked and no that was nice to see so I'll have more to talk about next week with Dan he's here so he can talk for himself all right not Dan's not here by the way oh yeah in case you didn't notice yeah Luke cat is also filling is filling in the ro ro I can't talk yeah uh I played an indie game this week I played started and finished a game in less than a week wow it's a short game yeah but uh I played the excavation of

Hobs Barrow this is an indie point and click Adventure game and it's excellent and I highly recommend if you like that kind of game uh you should check it out it's in the style of like the old uh I I think probably fate of Atlantis monkeyland 2 is probably the best equivalent kind of era of game um it doesn't have the ver it doesn't have the the you know the verbs and that down the bottom to click on you just click on things and interact but it's it's very good now that this is also one of the games we saw at PX that I think you quite like called The Drifter that's coming out next year much like this as well wait you saw that like just now at Pax yeah The Drifter did you talk to Dave from powerof no no oh okay you just saw it

there just saw it every time I went there they were busy talking to other people oh okay yeah know I like those guys yeah that's what we'll be talking about next week but no so cuz yeah I'm just looking the um page on Steam and everything's very positive for uh excavation of H HS yeah y yeah it's great you play as a Thomasina she's like a archaeologist uh who gets a letter she's she's writing a book about all the barrows in uh in in in England it's ancient burial mounds in case you're not familiar um listeners and Luke and she's writing a book about ancient barrows and she gets a letter from someone called Leonard Scher who says there's a very interesting Barrow

here in I forget the name of the town Hobs not Hobs it's called Hobs Barrow uh but uh come here and uh I'll show you this Barrow I think you'll find it very interesting so they agree to meet up she goes there and uh things happen things happen is it a long game guess not if you finished it I think it's probably just that that per nice can I see my play play time my play time would be like it's it's a it's a point click adventure game so it's not like you know there not lot of reloading or yeah you know anything like that so whatever my play time is I'm guessing is probably just probably it pretty standard and you don't want to with these types of games you don't want 10 12h hour gameplay no it was nice like I said it was nice it was fun it was it

didn't overstate to welcome I when it ended I was like that was very satisfying so let's see installed Hobs Barrow does it tell me my Play Time 10 hours 43 minutes oh it's longer than I thought but I'm actually no I'm more amazing you spent 10 hours playing a game it was really really captivating like yeah it's it's a really good game good story like it's interesting it's a little bit little bit Supernatural at times I might have to give it a try then slow build of the mystery like as you go on things are a bit mysterious and you have to kind of figure out what the [ __ ] is going on and it's good that sometimes happens with those games mhm yeah what's going on I'm just

going to try and use this on everyone see what happens yeah a little bit of that there some puzzles were I never had to look up the solution to a puzzle there was some that got me for a little bit and then I was like oh I know what to do yeah and then it always kind of seemed obvious afterwards but sometimes those games it's they can be a bit tricky like they want you do a very specific thing and in your head that doesn't make sense sometimes but I could just one puzzle where it's like that you need an item to complete the puzzle and it took me ages to even notice this item existed in the game that that was the that was the one that got me the most stuck but then once I found the thing I was like oh I know what to do I know exactly what to do yeah yeah

okay right yeah recommend it it's not on Xbox so I can't play it unfortunately no it's not no it's on Mac PC that might be it a lot of them starting to see with these typ of games they're also going to um switch switch as well it might be on switch actually I have no idea hang on is it on switch Hobs Barrow Googling for those which I think that these types of games would be good on switch he on the switch that would have been good good I should have done that yeah I'm trying to think like these types of games are good on a handheld now I got to look at what other the publisher wget eye games publish some good [ __ ] all of these games are quite good PR Gemini R I've played all of them that's the

problem unow I haven't played is that on switch it is maybe I'll play unavowed on the switch that's the only I haven't played yet anyway yeah it got me well see coincidentally it got me interested in you know I've always talked about making an adventure game yes and and uh The Drifter is made by poweroff who make Dave from poweroff makes power quest which is a Unity add-on for making point and click adventure games that I've been using and I've been watching all his tutorial videos so when you said you saw them there I was like oh y I know I know Dave y I mean I don't know him but I know I know I've watched hours and hours of him talking cuz yeah I was watching it it's like fully voiced this time so it's going to be quite interesting yeah

yeah and the art is amazing yeah the trailer for it looks incredible yeah so next year yeah I've been following the dev diaries oh I'll play it if I hadn't known I would have made a bit more of an effort to force talking to them I didn't know they were going to be there but I guess I should have assumed because it's Australia it just didn't occur to me yeah like CU they're that's where they are Yep this is the sort of biggest thing for the Indie scene in you pack there you go next time let me know I will and I'll kidnap him all right you'd have to do that then he can't make more content for me to watch okay I watch a lot of Australian game development people actually we've got some really great people here it's just a shame that we don't they don't get us

want me to talk about I want to talk about horse armor okay I can talk about horse armor what's going on with horse armor this is follow-up I suppose of a sort because we talked about I think we talked about this no we couldn't have I just realized 2006 we hav started this yet we started this podcast in 2011 yes like which is [ __ ] long time ago this is around Skyrims when we started this we we definitely talked about horse armmer on the podcast and cuz horse was really the first real DLC yeah yeah especially on a console uh and I purchased it so did I so when Oblivion came out on Xbox 360 the first like you said think probably potentially

one of the first DLCs ever available was horse armor which cost what like $10 or something yeah it was a bit expensive for what it was and cuz it was literally just a cosmetic thing on the horse it didn't do anything yep and I actually remember I got it saw my horse on it rode around my horse died and I never knew how to get the armor back well apparently oh no okay $3 how much was it price isn't really the issue anyway so a former developer from Bethesda said and we didn't I guess we didn't really know this before despite all the really really really bad feedback and jokes and people saying what a [ __ ] ripoff and and all that they sold millions of them y I can believe that so that's why that's why that's what we get I guess because people keep buying

it yeah like the best way to stop DLC if you're upset about it microtransaction don't buy it yep yeah that's but yeah like if you can just make this little thing horse armor sell it and sell it for millions and it it must have been just at the right price point yeah what was it I pay $3 cuz they're saying it's $250 on this website how much was the horse I'm thinking $495 oh no this would have been um back in the days of Microsoft points remember the store you didn't use cash I reckon would 400 points yeah you're right yeah apparently it was $250 yeah I'm happy those days are gone remember that when you if you want to buy like a game you had to use points

and you could never buy just amount of points you wanted yeah yeah that's [ __ ] stupid uh Nintendo tries to get you to do that on the switch but with money cuz I'll say if you go to buy a game on the switch M digitally and the game is say $40 yeah they'll say do you want to just pay the $40 or do you want to pay the 50 and just get the 50 pay $50 credit and then use that and it's like well then I'll just have $10 yeah on there why would I want to do that cuz you might then spend it there or they yeah it just seems weird to me sometimes like I don't know why you would do that I can understand like having any options to put credit on like that makes total sense but like if you're already in the process of buying it like that seems a

weird time give us 50 I guess maybe psychologically people do go oh yeah maybe I'll use that $10 for something so as as we just said like they're doing it because it's working yeah yeah um speaking of game money and whatnot I found this article very interesting i' like to talk about it we've talked before actually I think we've definitely talked about this at length and I think we had articles on the website about it just about um when multiple nasm wrote articles um the cost of piracy to game development companies and how we we don't obviously we don't dispute that there is some cost but also not everybody who Pirates a game would have

purchased that game same with movies and CDs and stuff like that just because someone downloaded a game doesn't mean you would have got money yeah had they not and so I thought this was interesting because at first uh I thought they were just like trying to calculate the lost money based on downloads that's not what this is this study looked at there's this particular type of copy protection for video games made by denuvo yes yes I'm aware of it so what they did is they looked at in like like like data on when a game comes out how much how many copies does it sell mhm and then versus at what point does the crack for the copy protection come out yep and then they look at sales

before the copy protection comes out sales after and in some cases sometimes it's like 12 weeks before the copy prote are they saying like is a trend cuz games will always sell most at the start and then start drop so when the crack comes out is there a big drop or is it just so there's like a chart here that says like um basically it looks like it's maybe 20% maybe it's about it looks like it's about 20% like on average like you look at this chart down the bottom comparison of weekly Revenue lost by week cracked and again this is very specula this is not def in any way but this is an interesting way of of doing it so if you look if on this chart if the crack came

out the same day the game came out they can expect lose slightly over 20% yep because people just will not well not people 20 2% of people won't pay for it that would have and then the ch goes from there that's actually quite interesting yeah I think it's definitely more accurate used in Australia they used to come out P py very hard and movie industry was going like way losing all this money but then every year they go we've made record profits yeah yeah yeah like that doesn't work with um I know we've talked about this before too with DVDs and movie piracy and stuff like that they complain about movie

piracy but they never the DVDs didn't exist when we were kids no movies are on VHS tapes and nobody bought movies on VHS tape well not nobody but like expensive most people did not buy movies on VHS tapes like this is a whole new Revenue stream you record movies off the television yeah exactly oh yeah so it's it always struck me as strange that like this thing didn't exist they DVDs came out they started making buckets of money CU everyone was just buying movies and and then some people started copying them and they were like oh we're losing all this you didn't have that money it's happening every time though like when the VHS came out and like you were able to record they went that's going to be the end of us when cassette tapes came out and you could

hit record off the radio people said that's going to be the end of us like it's every single time something CED out and then they just go oh we're actually making more money now so we'll be quiet yeah and how much yeah how much of these [ __ ] movies not all movies but like yeah I thought this very interesting very clever way of getting actual yeah I actually quite like it like it shows that like yeah if crack comes out very early that's when they'll lose the money if they if that crack can stay hold off they cuz by the end looks like at the end of six weeks that's when sales are sort of dropping off and comes out there people are just yeah I'm just

going to buy it they said interestingly it doesn't seem to matter what type of game it is the numbers are always pretty similar which I thought was very interesting like the percentages are quite similar like I know there are people out there who just will never ever buy a game like there are those people who are just yeah but you'll never get money from them so don't worry about it like yeah no that's yeah no that's I don't like the noo I think they yeah I don't like any of those things well I'm not endorsing them I'm just saying this was an interesting way of tracking it it's not that I don't like it's just like sometimes with this

like anti-piracy stuff it can actually impact the game itself it's intrusive and yeah like well was one of the Assassin's Creed games the DRM servers [ __ ] up and you could play the game yeah like that stuff still happens all the time yeah but I do like now that they will actually get to a point point where they go eh we're just removing it now yeah they should well this study said um they could after 12 weeks do that and it would have negligible impact because after 12 weeks the sales like the the the effect is negligible yeah like after 12 weeks people wanted the game who were going to buy it they going to buy it everyone else after 12 weeks they're waiting for a sale that's right yeah after 12 weeks everybody who's

going to buy it has bought it everyone's going to p has pirated it yeah don't worry about it too much after that yeah not everyone but like the majority of people we're not condoning piracy no not at all no but yeah 20% of the start's a big hit though yeah it is but again that still assumes those people would have bought bought it well well actually no because sorry that's not true because they were basing it on data yeah they those people in theory did buy games when there wasn't a crack yes that's how that's why this is different so I actually I should retract that yes that 20% might be legit yeah

yep I remember cracking games back in the day I mean I didn't crack any games but I remember games being cracked cracked well it's when you're at a l and you wanted to play like I remember having to apply cracks to a game yes yeah well sometimes only cracks I would actually sort of use were the ones where I didn't have to put the disc in yeah oh I've done that plenty of times yeah like I've purchased a game I've installed it I just don't want to have to get the disc out yep yeah I have a lot of games installed and I like to flick between them like an idiot yes like basically we just what it is now with steam like you just flick through change whatever you want does think but back then we had to yeah work for that yeah well you kid easy these days speaking of steam got

some followup we talked about the other week I'm pretty sure we talked about you and I talked about the um California law that says they'll have to say you're not buying the product you're buying a license this is unrelated to that I think uh it is timed to cons to fit with the new law but anyway steam now says when you buy a game on Steam it says a purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam click here for terms and conditions so they are telling you you're not buying the game product on Steam yeah but I don't is that actually enough for the law though because that just goes yes I've got a license I own a license to play that game whenever I

want don't know the license shouldn't go away the license doesn't go away but license might go away that's in the terms and conditions you have to click that little link the steam subscriber agreement games could go away I've had stuff but I'm purchasing a license I'm not renting a license what's that I'm purchasing a license I'm not renting a license not if if a publisher removes a game from Steam yes you still Li isless they don't have a license so it doesn't mean anything it's worthless yeah that's what with that but although with this this may alleviate something I've always wondered like what happens if they come back yeah that's the thing I've always wondered like in like when MythBusters left like if that comes back in 2 years

time the license I got does that still valid my instinct with steam is that they' give it back to you just because steam I I feel like whether I'm incorrect but I feel like they're kind of consumer friendly they've got enough money that it's not really going to yeah I maybe I'm maybe they've just managed to trick me into thinking that over many many years but I feel like they would give you the game back if they got it back how often do um games leave steam I I don't know if that ever happens I was saying as an example that's what's been happening on other things and I assume that's why they' had to put this text SE St leave like um even in the Microsoft store and stuff some like um The Telltale Games where
